Over the coming days we’ll be travelling with H.E. Dorje Denpa Rinpoche and Venerable Khyentse Kassapo, exploring some of Indonesia’s lesser-known Buddhist sites—places where history, practice and living tradition quietly come together.

This isn’t simply a sightseeing journey. It’s an opportunity for meditation, reflection and discovering that every true pilgrimage ultimately leads within.

One of the many powerful places we’ll visit is Joko Dolog in Surabaya. The statue is believed to depict the great Mahāsiddha of the southern hemisphere, known in the Tibetan tradition as Śrīvijaya, and in the Javanese tradition as Mpu Bharada. Royal chaplain to King Airlangga around 1019 CE, he is said to have made the statue himself before departing on a long meditation retreat. Originally located in Kediri, it was later moved to Surabaya.

Standing before the young Mpu Bharada, it doesn’t feel like you’re simply looking at an ancient stone statue. The atmosphere is extraordinary. There is a tangible presence—a reminder that the lives and practice of the great masters continue to inspire and support Buddhist practitioners today.

Her presence has been so warmly received by staff — a truly inspiring start for mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing in regional Australia.

As a Mahayana Buddhist practitioner, Peir brings deep understanding of the Dharma and compassionate approach that will enrich the lives of both inmates and staff alike.

What a wonderful time connecting in the Riverina region — and now, onward as we prepare to welcome and train our next chaplain!

This year’s NSW Corrective Services Prison Chaplains Conference gathered the largest number of Buddhist chaplains ever. Our presence is growing — and so is our positive impact in multi-faith dialogue.

After a big session on mental health and selfcare from a secular lens, we came together as Buddhist chaplains to reflect on our own approach: embodied, integrated, holistic.

It was a rich, heartfelt conversation and a reminder that we must be vigilant. Vigilant in how we offer care, ensuring it always flows from the Dharma. At the heart of this is kalyāṇa-mitrata — spiritual friendship — without which there is no path, and no chaplaincy.

I want to say a big thank you to the Chaplaincy Coordinator and Corrective Services NSW for awarding me the COVID Service Medal for exemplary service during the 2020–2022 pandemic.

The medal is called ‘Always Forward’ (translated from Latin) and its silver design symbolises resilience, hope, and alertness in the face of adversity. But for me, this isn’t just a medal for showing up during COVID — it reflects the incredible work that Buddhist Chaplaincy was able to achieve, which also supported all other religions in Corrective Services NSW.

Video Chaplaincy Calls – When centres were closed to non-custodial staff, I was able to propose and trial virtual visits with inmates. What started as a Buddhist initiative became a state-wide service, and even today video calls are still helping inmates in regional prisons stay connected with a Chaplain.

Mind Breaks Magazine – Together with Chaplain Anna Carmody at Long Bay, we created a Buddhist magazine for inmates when we couldn’t physically be there. It offered Dharma, inspiration, and emotional support, and I’m thrilled that Mind Breaks is still going strong today.

Wellbeing Booklets – Chaplaincy also contributed to resources created by psychology teams during lockdowns, providing words of comfort and practical support for inmates facing long periods of isolation.

This medal is a reminder of what can be achieved through practicing compassion and working together in times of challenge.

It was an honour to be the first Buddhist chaplain to offer a community meditation during the celebrations — a quiet moment of reflection, grounding, and connection in the middle of such a vibrant, powerful day.

Held on the lands of the Biripi people, it was deeply meaningful to share a moment of stillness and respect in honour of the Elders, ancestors, and the enduring cultural wisdom of this land. People gathered with open hearts — many trying meditation for the first time — and the energy was just beautiful.

So much joy, laughter, community spirit and healing.

A heartfelt thank you to Community Corrections for the invitation and support. I’m truly grateful to be part of something this significant and look forward to continuing the journey with community across the Mid-North Coast.

Welcoming Sofan – a New Light in Buddhist Chaplaincy

We’re so pleased to introduce Sofan, the newest chaplain joining the @buddhistcouncilofnsw (BCNSW) Buddhist Chaplaincy team. Currently training under the guidance of Buddhist Counselling, she’s immersing herself in the practical and compassionate approach of the BCNSW Chaplaincy Program.

Sofan’s chaplaincy journey is deeply supported—not only by the chaplaincy program, but also by her Buddhist community and the compassionate monastics at @nantientemple , who guide her in spiritual work with wisdom and clarity. With this solid foundation, she brings a gentle strength into her role.

Sofan’s wish is simple yet profound: to be a presence of care and calm for those inside. Welcoming Sofan – a New Light in Buddhist Chaplaincy

We’re so pleased to introduce Sofan, the newest chaplain joining the @buddhistcouncilofnsw (BCNSW) Buddhist Chaplaincy team. Currently training under the guidance of Buddhist Counselling, she’s immersing herself in the practical and compassionate approach of the BCNSW Chaplaincy Program.

Sofan’s chaplaincy journey is deeply supported—not only by the chaplaincy program, but also by her Buddhist community and the compassionate monastics at @nantientemple , who guide her in spiritual work with wisdom and clarity. With this solid foundation, she brings a gentle strength into her role.

Sofan’s wish is simple yet profound: to be a presence of care and calm for those inside. What a Day at Yulo Kopa!
This past weekend, I had the joy of leading a truly memorable day retreat at the stunning Yulo Kopa in the Hastings Valley, near Port Macquarie.

30 wonderful guests joined me for a deep dive into the benefits of meditation, learning how to meditate, and sharing in guided sessions throughout the day. A real highlight was our Shinrin-Yoku forest bathing experience—a serene walk through Yulo Kopa’s breathtaking rainforest that left everyone feeling deeply grounded and connected.

The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, with plenty of mingling, heartfelt chats, coffee, and nourishing snacks. It was a day full of calm, connection, and community.

Today I celebrated the end of the year with the chaplaincy team of various faiths and friends who have no particular faith, embodying the power of the oneness of humanity and the gift of generosity. Sharing a homemade dal makhani—taught to me by Venerable Khyentse—becomes an offering of dana (generosity), a key virtue in the six paramitas and Buddhist practice. This act reflects the heart of giving and fostering connection. Giving makes me happy too! 🙏🏻

Buddhist chaplaincy has long been a guiding presence here, fostering a strong interfaith partnership with the resident Christian Chaplain, who warmly welcomed me.

Buddhist Counselling is thrilled to have partnered with Holiday Inn Parramatta, the Buddhist Council of NSW, and Mental Health First Aid Australia to facilitate a training day for chaplains working in hospitals and prisons!

This initiative helps Buddhist chaplains enhance their skills in recognising and supporting mental health needs early on.

A big thank you to facilitator Nygell, who generously donated his time and expertise, bringing energy, wisdom, and compassion to this important day. We’re excited to see our chaplains leading the way in providing mental health care and support in their roles.

Buddhist Counselling is thrilled to have partnered with Holiday Inn Parramatta, the Buddhist Council of NSW, and Mental Health First Aid Australia to facilitate a training day for chaplains working in hospitals and prisons!

This initiative helps Buddhist chaplains enhance their skills in recognising and supporting mental health needs early on.
